The history of the IPA is long and confusing. Essentially, the popular explanation tells of British brewers who increased the number of hops in their pale ales to act as a preservative for traveling long distances to British colonies in India in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Whether it is true or not, IPAs were invented long ago but have re-emerged over the past two decades, undergoing a steady increase in popularity.

According to the latest data from AmericanCraftBeer.com, IPAs were the third fastest-growing beer category in America from 2017-2018 and take up 6% of the craft beer market. For more by-the-numbers stats, IPAs grew their sales numbers by 10% YOY last year and brought in $895.8 million in that time frame.

To the average beer drinker, IPAs are obviously plentiful at every bar, tap room, bottle shop or gas station you might pop into, especially here in San Diego, and the numbers only add more proof to the pudding that IPAs are here to stay. But in an ever-expanding category, the question must be asked: how different styles of IPA are there?

It's hard to keep track as new categories get added to the BJCP/BA official list each year - think "New England-style" or "Hazy IPAs" in 2018 - AND - clever marketing teams at breweries across the country always add an unofficial twist to their own styles: think "West Coast IPA" from many So Cal brewers including yours truly or "Fresh Hop IPA" from craft beer legends like Sierra Nevada.

Let's start with official beer categories as determined by one of the governing bodies in craft beer, the Beer Judge Certification Program(BJCP). According to the BJCP, there are nine (9) separate IPA styles:

American IPABelgian IPA Black IPA Brown IPADouble IPAEnglish IPARed IPARye IPAWhite IPA

Now let's look at another reference for official style categories, this time from the Brewer's Association. They classify only a handful of styles - including:

English-Style India Pale AleSession India Pale AleAmerican-Style India Pale AleJuicy or Hazy India Pale AleAmerican-Style Imperial or Double India Pale AleJuicy or Hazy Imperial or Double India Pale Ale

Now we have an idea of how many official IPA styles exist. Excluding repeats from BJCP/BA, this gives us a total of twelve (12) official IPAcategories!

So, we've determined we have a good base of twelve different official IPA categories, but leave it to brewers to be creative! Other sub-categories can number in the hundreds when you examine them on Untappd, but let's take a nicely condensed list from CraftBeer.com that reminds us of a few fan-favorite categories:

West Coast-Style IPA Fruit IPAWet Hop IPACoffee IPA

For good measure, we'll rattle off a few sub-sub-categories that we've seen around town in San Diego and have come to love! Including:

Fresh Hop IPAMilkshake IPABrut IPASour IPATropical IPATriple IPAMurky IPA

The list goes on and on and that is part of the beauty of the beer industry. Creators gonna create! We'll see where inventive brewers take IPAs in the coming years. For hop-heads and beer snobs, this is a category where we will continue to not be disappointed!

Share your favorite IPA styles with us @longshipbrewery on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter! Enjoy IPAs but don't be afraid to try something new and always remember to VOYAGE ON

San Diego Beer Week 2018 at Longship Brewery

San Diego Beer Week is coming fast! Hood and Nugget. These hops play nicely together to create a robust Pale Ale that creates a well-balanced flavor profile including floral, citrus, bitterness and a finishing sweetness. The third hop in our primary pale ale series is Santiam - an aroma hop from Oregon that contributes to the floral theme and offers a slight spiciness. The beer also has a great head retention and nice carbonation for optimal mouthfeel.

Odinson #2: Building off of the same malt bill and recipe of Odinson #1, the second in the series will offer unique flavors from the four different hop varieties we'll be adding. The hops used in Odinson #2 are Glacier, Northern Brewer, Sterling and Vanguard. Odinson #3 is loaded down with old-school hops like Cascade, Centennial and Cluster that give this beer a familiar taste! We love our dogs (and our beer) in San Diego - in fact, we are the #4 Most Dog-Friendly City in the U.S., which is why most breweries, including Longship Brewery, are extremely pet-friendly and allow you to bring your best friend along on your beer-seeking adventures!

If you've wanted to include your dog in your outings, but you’re hesitant about leashing up and heading to your favorite craft beer spot, here are some answers to commonly asked questions about bringing your dog to the tasting room, courtesy of the doggie experts at Smiling Dog!

Definitely bring treats for your pup

Yes! Not all locations offer dog treats, so having your pup’s favorite treats and using them to reinforce the behavior you want can help both of you have a great time at the tasting room. Make a game out of it! Is your pup looking at you? Here’s a treat! Settling near you? Here’s a treat! Not barking at other dogs? Here’s a treat! You could also bring your dog’s favorite long-lasting chew to help him settle near you.

Get your pup to settle near you

Bring a mat just for them! Our trainers recommend ½ of a yoga mat. It is light and is easy to transport. If you pair being on the mat with calmness and lotsof reinforcement (treats!) then your pup will love hanging out on their mat. No need for nagging to get her to go to (or stay on) the mat, if your pup wanders off, simply lure him or her back onto the mat with a treat and give more treats while on the mat.

My dog loves other dogs! Should I let him/her greet and play with all the dogs in the brewery?

Always ask first! And if the answer is yes, keep the greeting short and move on - leave play time for the dog park. If the answer is no, be respectful, don’t take it personally, because there’s probably a good reason they said no! ” There are some dogs that are happy to be in the same space with other dogs but have no interest in interacting with them, in which case just remember they need their space too!

Make sure to keep your doggie on a leash

A standard 6 ft leash would be the appropriate length for being at a tasting room. A leash is helpful to know where your dog is at all times. We want everyone to enjoy their tasting room experience and you and your pups will still have a great time if they are kept within a 6 ft reach, and out of potentially harmful situations (i.e. tails being stepped on, doggie brawls, leashes acting like tripwires, etc.)

Keep an eye on your dog's comfort level (make sure they're having as much fun as you are!)

Tasting rooms can be sensory-overload for a dog not accustomed to that kind of environment, and even the most confident dogs can have off days or run into situations that are overwhelming (think of the beer bus arriving with a group of merrymakers all dressed up in crazy costumes - it happens!).

Here are some signs of your dog being uncomfortable:

Tail tuckingCowering/hidingLip lickingYawningWhale eye (wide-open eyes with whites showing)Barking or whining

Some of these signs can be pretty subtle, so keep a close eye. How to help your pup? Toss a handful of treats on the mat or distract with a chew toy. Is there a quieter corner you can move to? If that’s still not helping, then the best thing is to drink up, pay your tab and take your pup home and try again on a less busy time or day.

BONUS:

I really want to bring my dog to the brewery but I need more help - what do I do? What a coincidence, pub-ready pups are Smiling Dog’s specialty!

Here’s some contact info:

Allison Beaulieu, CPDT-KA

www.smilingdogsd.com

allison@smilingdogsd.com

For help with general dog training, check out the trainers on this website:

http://sandiegodogtrainers.org/

We want you to be able to have as much fun in our tasting room with your dog as you might without - so don’t be shy to leash them up and head out the door with new knowledge and confidence in your ability to use these tips to your advantage!

We look forward to seeing you and your furry friend in the tasting room soon. Anywhere you go, you’re bound to find a menu overstuffed with hoppy beers. At Longship Brewery, we appreciate all styles of beer and value variety. Hoppy or not, dark or light, we love them all. One particular style we love that doesn’t to show up in tasting rooms as often as it should is the time-tested Pilsner. With springtime around the corner, it’s time for Pilsners to shine!

To the average beer drinker, Pilsners might be thought of as low-quality, mass-produced beers from the “big beer” companies. However, when a Pilsner is done right, it can be light, flavorful and a great display of the brewer’s skills.

Pilsners are a classic light style of beer with a very careful balance of flavors. Their light nature make them one of the more difficult styles of beer to brew. The more delicate flavors of the beer, the less places there are for flaws to hide. Other beer styles with stronger flavors, while delicious, are more forgiving to a brewer’s mistakes. Hops and roasty malts can hide certain off flavors, and are often used to do so. This is not a luxury a brewer has with a pilsner.

Longship Brewery’s Sunstone Pilsner [4.9% ABV | 25 IBU] is one great example in San Diego of a light, well-balanced and flawless beer. It has flavor to spare and a very drinkable profile. The Sunstone is a must-try if you are a beer connoisseur who appreciates a variety of styles, are just getting into craft beer, or simply want a light, easy drinking beer to enjoy with war
m weather. Yes, we still have fantastic IPAs on the menu at all times, but Longship Brewery is also dedicated to pushing ourselves and our skills to create classic beers with a new twist.

Stop by the tasting room to put your lips on our delicious and technically perfect Pilsner. Explore the world of craft beer with us and always VOYAGE ON!

Cheers!

Meet Ryan #1

At Longship Brewery, there is a 100% chance Ryan will be behind the bar on any given day - because we have two! I started drinking their pale ale which led me to drinking different kinds of beers from them and experimenting with new styles. It was that first encounter with Sierra Nevada that really fueled my passion for beer.

Not long after falling in love with beer, I learned that San Diego State University had created a Business of Craft Beer certification program. I was lucky to be enrolled in that program’s first graduating class and ended up with their second level of certification upon graduating. Those classes introduced me to a lot of people in the San Diego craft beer industry. It made me really want to be a part of this industry’s culture and work within this craft we love so much.

How did you end up at Longship?

I learned about Longship while I was doing an internship for a local company that installs draught systems, TapCraft, LLC. I was also working as a Spirits Advisor about one block away at the Mira Mesa BevMo. At first, I was offered a position to be a beertender on the weekends. After a while, I became a full-time employee and worked my way up to my current title of Events Manager at Longship Brewery.

Favorite part about working at Longship:

I get to meet new people and share my passion for craft beer with them. You get to learn a lot about people on this job and I really enjoy getting to do that on a daily basis. I’ve made a lot of new friends and the best part is, new people keep coming through the door every day.

Favorite moment at Longship:

During the anniversary party, I loved it when all of our VIP guests who bought a custom Anniversary Drinking Horn raised them high in celebration of this amazing event I was part of putting together. It felt great to organize an event all of our fans were enjoying so much.

Favorite beer at Longship and in San Diego:

It’s always hard to choose because we have so many different styles - but my favorite is the Leif Lager (Vienna Lager). It’s just a solid all-around beer that’s good at any time and any occasion.

Outside of Longship, my favorite beer in San Diego is the Electric Youth Coffee Pale Ale from Thunderhawk Alements in the Miralani Makers’ District.

Top Holiday-Spiced Beers in San Diego

(photo courtesy Monkeys Fighting Robots)Some flavors just taste better during the holidays. Warm up with a few of the best holiday-spiced craft beers San Diego has to offer.

Here is a list of some of the best winter warmers in town!

Valknut-Meg: Longship Brewery in Mira Mesa has a very diverse menu and does not shy away from fearlessly brewing beers with bold and balanced flavors. The Valknut-Meg is a Brown Ale showcasing one of the season’s most recognizable flavors: Nutmeg. “Brewed with freshly ground nutmeg, this American Brown ale is an experience unlike any other. Sweet and spicy.”

Xocoveza: Perhaps one of the best seasonal beer examples comes from one of San Diego’s oldest craft beer institutions, Stone Brewing. It should be no surprise for them to top any list, and this exciting seasonal is “an insanely delicious take on Mexican hot chocolate brewed with cocoa, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.”

Noche de los Muertos: Aztec Brewery’s foray into holiday spice (cinnamon) could not pack more of a punch! This devilishly good beer is a great accessory to cold winter nights – and if you’re in the mood for “an intense Imperial Stout with a hint of cinnamon spice. Big, rich and black as night.”

Pearfect Apple Pie: Nickel Beer Co. in Julian, CA is set against the mountains in one of San Diego’s most beautiful and quaint destinations. Leaning on the apples that the town is most known for, Nickel transforms a holiday favorite into a delightful little beer spiced with Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Allspice and Clove.

December Nights: Thorn Brewing has a great winter offering that technically does not feature holiday spice, but this hoppy Imperial Red Ale made the list because the already malty beer is “highlighted by a healthy dollop of dark Belgian candy syrup and molasses.” The only thing missing is sugarplum fairies dancing on the cap.

Funeral Pyre: Another from Longship Brewery, this seasonal beer has been described as “Christmas in a cup.” Taking its name from flaming Norse burial altars, the Funeral Pyre is sure to warm you up as well! “Brewed with allspice, this porter is a unique blend of smoke, malt, and spice.”

Enjoy the season with friends and family and enjoy your beers responsibly.

Voyage on!

San Diego Beer Week Schedule at Longship Brewery

It’s almost time for San Diego Beer Week (SDBW)! What inspired you to start Longship Brewery?

I had been home-brewing for years and after a while when I visited other breweries I found myself thinking that what I was making at home was often better quality, and often had a different take from the offerings. I was in the midst of a career change when I finally decided to take the plunge and pursue my dream of opening a brewery because I thought I had a lot to contribute to the San Diego beer scene in terms of style variety and beer quality. Our commitment to quality and beer excellence parallels the drive that led the Vikings to be master navigators and explorers.

I want to leave no doubt in the customers’ minds that the beer they are drinking has been carefully crafted and brewed with new and unique perspective in mind.

2. How much experience do you have brewing?

I had been home-brewing for nine years before we opened. A roommate of mine had started home-brewing so I learned it was possible for me to try it out as well, and one day we were at a store and we saw the Mr. Beer kit. I bought it, made a terrible lager, then immediately went and got better equipment to start extract brewing. Over the years I continued to upgrade and the batches got better and more diverse. I only ever followed two recipes when I got started and quickly preferred to put my own spin on recipes.

I also competed the American Brewer’s Guild course in 2008, so I have known for a very long time that this is the industry that I wanted to be part of. The final component of the course was a short internship at a small San Diego brewery, where I was able to get more hands on training, apply the theories that I had learned, and become comfortable with the larger equipment size.

3. What were the steps you had to take to make the brewery a reality?

First was the business plan and doing my research on the industry to see if it was viable. After that, I presented the plan to investors to get the money and then searched for a place. Finding the appropriate location proved to be a very time consuming challenge. After that was navigating through the endless legal pitfalls of permits and construction that all brewery owners are forced to face. The process was not easy but after a total of3 years, we finally landed in a very good location in Mira Mesa and we enjoy being neighbors with Green Flash.

4. How do you think things went when Longship first launched?

It went extremely well. We didn’t really know what to expect at first, but even for our soft opening we had people coming in off the streets to check us out. Everyone seemed glad to have us in the area and I was thrilled to be so well-received by the people in the area. At the time of the opening, we only had four beers on tap, (Allfather, Golden Torc, Abomination, and Battle of Leuven) but people liked those, and our tasting room environment to keep coming back.

5. Can you summarize what it means to have made it a year in one of the most competitive craft beer cities in the country?

Well, we still have a lot to do and a lot of room to grow, but it makes me feel great and validated that we have people that enjoy the beer and a number of regulars that appreciate the beer, the environment, and our approach to the craft. I’m proud of how people react to our beer and the level of service we provide. Being open for one year has validated the last three years of work it took to start Longship. Our first year was full of lessons learned and building the foundation. We look forward to growing and improving in the many years to come.

6. If you had a proudest moment as the owner, what would that be?

That had to be when Ragnabock, our Doppelbock, won a silver medal at the New York International Beer Competition. Winning a medal was proof that we are what we say we are: a quality craft brewery. I’m proud of Ragnabock because it has turned people into craft beer drinkers, and helped customers start to expand their beer world. There are a lot of proud little moments when I see people appreciating Longship beer, but it’s all summed up in the success of the Ragnabock.

Ragnabock’s win and our opening night were my proudest and happiest moments. A few of the guys that did the construction for the tasting room were here for the grand opening and they all commented that it was the first time they had seen me smile – which was probably true. To put it simply: construction was a bitch.

7. Where do you see Longship headed in the years to come?

In the next year, the goal is to focus more on distribution. I also plan to start the process of ordering and installing the new tanks in order to double production and push more distribution. We also hope to host more regular events at the brewery and provide a unique experience with our beers.

We’re really poised to grow in year two. This first year has been a training period and playtime is over. Now that we have a more balanced and put-together team, we are excited for what’s to come and I expect things to get even better. We are ready to continue the voyage!

Click here for tickets to our One Year Anniversary Party on July 1, 2017

Cheers to year two!

Meet Chuck

If you’ve been to Longship before, chances are you had a wonderful encounter with our Assistant Brewer, Chuck. We met up for a couple of beers to talk things over and scheduled a trial brew day together. On my first visit to Longship we brewed the Battle of Leuven witbier we had on tap for the opening. Two weeks later, he hired me and I have been brewing with him ever since. I have had a hand in every beer in one way or another since day one. Before that, I had been home brewing for nearly 5 years. I have my own custom system that I built. I don’t stick to any particular style with my home brewing and I’ll make anything - Browns, IPAs, Stouts - everything.

Is there a beer you are most proud of?Ragnabock for sure. That’s the Doppelbock we won a medal with in the first competition we entered in which is very cool. It’s a great beer that most people wouldn’t typically go for but end up being pleasantly surprised with

What is your favorite Longship beer to drink and why?The Leif Lager, our Vienna Lager. It’s my go-to. I like the style, and I think we did a good job on it. It’s a great beer to crack open on the weekends and sit back and enjoy. It’s got a nice sweetness from the Vienna malt and a great hop profile as well to make it flavorful. The Shieldwall (West Coast IPA) is definitely becoming one that I love so that may take its place soon

What is your favorite part about working at Longship? My favorite part about working at Longship is serving the beers and watching people’s reactions to the work that I do. That’s why I started brewing to begin with. It’s nice to make something that people enjoy.

What beer or event coming up are you looking forward to the most?I’m looking forward to our one-year anniversary on July 1st – that’s going to be a fun event and a time to celebrate the last year of work. I’m also looking forward to releasing our upcoming Gose which we just finished. I like sours and we get a lot of requests for kettle sours so it’s nice to fill that request from our guests. Plus, it’s a sour, which we've never brewed before so that’s exciting. We haven’t practiced it before and we’re using using the whole big system for it which is a bold move but I’m confident in the recipe and really looking forward to how it turns out.

Chuck is a man of many talents and a great person to chat with. Stop by the Longship Brewery tasting room soon to meet Chuck and get a little taste of what we’re all about. He’ll greet you with a bearded smile and a cold beer.

Cheers!

Get Ready for Shieldwall! They tend to have a very noticeable hop aroma when smelling the beer (smell is 90% of taste after all) and a strong hop flavor and lingering bitter aftertaste.

What makes it a “West Coast” style is the type of hops. Whereas East Coast IPAs are slightly more balanced with malt sweetness and use floral hops, a traditional West Coast IPA will taste more bitter from substantial additions of tropical and citrus hops.

Like all Longship beers, our West Coast-style IPA is perfectly balanced so that the hoppiness of the beer doesn’t overwhelm the palate but still provides a lingering bitterness and a clean finish.

We invite you to come on this fantastic flavor journey with us and pull up a chair at our tasting room where our friendly staff are ready and waiting to pour you a pint of this hoppy liquid. In Norse mythology, the Vanirs were a group of gods associated with fertility and plenty. This flavorful and complex beer is our salute to the fall harvest and to a great first few months. Almost a sour due to the cranberry tartness, there are a lot of different flavors that come together to create a unique drinking experience.

Thursday 11/10

Our second special release is our very own pumpkin ale. Made with a lot of real pumpkin and spices, this bright orange beer showcases the pumpkin flavor without any vegetable flavors. Paired with its spices, it is a pleasure to drink.

Additionally, you can come and visit us at The New Kids festival, welcoming San Diego's newest breweries and distilleries. www.sdnewkids.com

Friday 11/11

Finishing off beer week, we a re releasing our collaboration with Carver, Coal, and Barrel BBQ. Using the dry rub used in the smoked tri-tip, we have created a smoked bbq porter, named Funeral Pyre. Flavorful, yet not overwhelming, this beer pairs perfectly with the smoked tri-tip that will be available on that day. This is, absolutely, a must try.

So come join us throughout the week for your chance to try three unique and amazing beers, available only for San Diego Beer Week.

Longship Brewery is raffling off two Comic Con access codes!

We're excited to announce that this weekend we will be raffling off two access codes for the sold out 2016 Comic Con coming to San Diego July 21st though 24th.
